Working with Visual Studio 2010 - Part 1

0:00

hi

0:03

I would like to show you how to get

0:05

started with Team Foundation server 2010

0:08

team

0:09

projects this video assumes that you

0:11

have already installed and configured

0:13

team Foundation server 2010 if you have

0:16

not done so you can go and check my blog

0:20

hulas sal.com where you will find a

0:23

couple of posts uh regarding the

0:25

installation and configuration also this

0:28

video is based on Foundation server 2010

0:31

beta

0:33

2 okay so um once you have installed and

0:38

configured TFS 2010 first thing you have

0:41

to do is to connect to the to the server

0:44

so let's open Visual Studio

0:52

2010 okay and now on Vis Studio

0:56

2010 uh to connect to the server you can

0:59

use the connect Foundation server in

1:01

start page or you can go to Team connect

1:03

to team Foundation server it's just the

1:05

same um click on servers click on ADD

1:09

type the name of your team Foundation

1:11

server okay which in my case I have in

1:14

in another machine in my network click

1:19

okay this will require our credentials

1:22

let's type the your

1:27

credentials okay let's wait

1:30

there you go we have just connected to

1:32

the

1:33

server as soon as you connect to the

1:35

server you will get H the directory of

1:38

all your project collections that you

1:40

have so far project collections are just

1:42

groupings of Team projects for better

1:45

Administration now click

1:47

connect and in the right side of in your

1:50

team Explorer you will find that uh you

1:54

have your default collection and is it

1:57

is here where we can create our team

1:59

project so right click click on new team

2:04

project and in this dialogue first thing

2:06

to do is to specify the name for your

2:09

for your them project in this case we

2:12

will be working in a sample fictional um

2:16

bookstore application Windows

2:18

application where you can do several

2:20

management of uh books basically books

2:24

so let's call

2:27

this bookstore

2:30

click

2:31

next you need to specify which H

2:34

software process template you want to

2:36

use for your project these are the two

2:39

ones available um in TFS 2010 we will

2:43

use MSS for software development version

2:46

5 beta 2 click next you need to specify

2:51

a SharePoint site where all the the

2:54

templates and several documents related

2:56

to the project will be stored so to do

2:59

this let's click on

3:01

configure and now let's specify the

3:04

address okay we will use this for the

3:07

address you can see the complete URL

3:09

down here TFS bookstore click okay click

3:13

next you need to specify if you want to

3:15

create an empty Source control folder

3:18

here we will use the bookstore Source

3:20

control folder click next and then click

3:25

finish okay so right now the um the

3:29

wizard will be in charge of creating the

3:32

source control folders the SharePoint

3:35

site the preparing the SQL Server

3:38

database and the word item times and and

3:41

a lot of stuff that will be done here

3:43

this will take probably several minutes

3:45

so now just let's just wait for this to

3:48

finish

4:01

so now that project has been created

4:04

let's keep this Mark enabled and click

4:07

close so first thing that you will

4:09

notice here okay let's enter the

4:12

password is the process guidance okay

4:15

that will be loaded right now in the

4:18

central pan of the team Visual

4:20

Studio this process guidance is very

4:23

useful to understand the whole H

4:25

development process in our case we chose

4:28

the MSS for agile software development

4:31

uh version five and that's what we got

4:34

here if you browse around this um this

4:38

site you will find uh a lot of

4:40

information on how what is this process

4:44

based on which will be scrum the scrum

4:46

process H which artifacts you get which

4:49

rowes are involved and several stuff

4:51

related to the process okay now let's

4:54

close this and let's take a quick look

4:57

uh at what we got once the project the

5:00

project was created and if you see in

5:02

the team Explorer in the right side you

5:05

can see that we have several um notes

5:07

here first one called work items so work

5:10

items are the the way that you can H

5:15

assign tasks several kinds of tasks uh

5:18

user stories uh box issues and some more

5:22

tasks that will also depend on the

5:24

process template that you

5:26

chose and work items will be very useful

5:29

for tracking the the advance of the

5:31

project and to control the project also

5:35

ER you will have you will find several

5:38

queries that allow you to see ER the

5:41

several word items that you will be

5:42

using using several queries different

5:45

queries in the next note you will find

5:48

the documents uh folder this documents

5:51

folder is actually H linked to a

5:54

SharePoint site that was created with

5:57

this project so in in this this uh

6:00

folder you can see several dashboards

6:03

Excel

6:04

reports that were created the process

6:07

guidance which is the one that we just

6:10

saw ER several samples and templates to

6:13

get you started on your documents and

6:16

the shared documents folder where you

6:17

have uh also several important documents

6:20

that we will see in a few okay that's a

6:23

document folder you also get several

6:26

reports okay these are uh SQL Server

6:29

reporting Services reports that allow

6:32

you to

6:33

see um from different views the advance

6:36

of your project in the current status

6:39

okay you get build reports bug reports

6:42

dashboard reports several other reports

6:44

okay project management you can see here

6:46

test here okay you also get the builds

6:50

note here where you will be able to

6:52

create your the builds for your

6:54

application so you can automate in

6:57

several ways the the way that your

7:00

project will be created and the way that

7:03

you will get the assemblies the

7:05

installers the documentation and several

7:08

other stuff and the source control

7:09

folder is for H entering the this double

7:14

click to enter the source control in the

7:17

source control Explorer window okay we

7:19

don't have any Source right now but this

7:22

is the place where you will be able to

7:23

manage your Source

7:25

control okay now let's take a look at

7:28

the project portal if you right click in

7:30

the in the team project and click on

7:32

show project portal this will open a

7:35

SharePoint site that was created for

7:37

your project enter the

7:40

credentials okay let's

7:43

wait okay so you can see now we have the

7:48

SharePoint site in the SharePoint site

7:50

you will find a lot of stuff the default

7:53

view that you can you get here the

7:54

default page is the burn down page where

7:57

you will eventually see several

7:59

dashboards with information about the

8:01

progress of the of the project okay so

8:05

this is just one of the possible

8:06

dashboards burn down you also get

8:09

quality bux tests several other stuff

8:12

right now we can we cannot see the

8:14

information because the analysis

8:17

Services cubes have not been built so

8:19

far but they will be eventually built as

8:22

your progress in your project you also

8:24

get Excel reports you get reporting

8:28

Services reports you get the documents

8:31

like for example if you go to samples

8:32

and templates you will get several uh

8:36

templates for your project like for

8:38

example if you want to write user

8:40

stories you can go to personas and

8:42

design and you will get for example the

8:45

template for user Stories the template

8:47

for persona definition and a lot of more

8:49

stuff if you go to share documents you

8:52

would get for example the product

8:54

backlog and the specific iteration uh

8:58

documents okay this is all based on

9:00

scrum process so this is the appropriate

9:02

documents for this

9:04

process if you click okay hold

9:07

on okay so if you click in Team web

9:10

access what you get is the web access

9:14

view of the team Explorer so basically

9:17

you can do here anything that you can do

9:19

in the visual studio team Explorer so

9:21

the team web access is very useful for

9:24

the people in the team that don't really

9:25

need a visual studio installed in their

9:27

machines maybe project project manager

9:29

ERS product managers and that kind of

9:31

people okay you can do a lot in here

9:34

let's close this and well that's pretty

9:37

much it for this video so hopefully you

9:40

got an idea of what you get when you

9:42

create once you created your first

9:44

project and hopefully in the next video

9:45

I will show you H how to get started

9:48

with the user stories in your project

9:50

thank you very much see you next time
